Double Page Editorial Spread

This brief required me to do an illustration for a double page spread for a magazine of my choice, which I chose Rolling Stone magazine. This meant that my editorial would have to suite Rolling Stone magazine, so I had to follow their format, style, layout and use similar fonts etc. We than had to select a story from about 10, which were supplied to us by the lecture.

My illustration would have to be based on the story that we have chose.  The main aim of this illustration is to invite somebody paging through the magazine to actually read the story. The project brief warned me to try and avoid using photography since the main strategy was to try and do what photography could not achieve. The brief gave me the freedom of doing anything I wanted just as long as it had a link to the chosen story. I chose to work with the story by Ndumiso Ngcobo, titled “There’s a lot in this pot, but find me amadumbe”(June 2014).
My concept is worked upon the search of the amadumbe in Johannesburg, by the main character in this story. I wanted to play around with the idea of searching and not finding since he also ended up not finding the amadumbe, which is how I came up with the thought of using ball in cup trick.

This game also gives you that feeling of searching for something knowing it is in reach but just not knowing where to find it. In this case it would be the idumbe inside of the cup and would have somebody try and point out where it is. Than I thought I would use the hands illustrations to try and create some movement in the page causing the eye to also try and look for the idumbe might be. The hands also show how confused this guys must have been seeing that he is in a place he does not know and looking for the amadumbe and everybody pointing him in their direction.
